Compacted bentonite hydro-mechanical modelling when interaggregate porosity tends to zero

چکیده
Abstract A formulation is proposed for reproducing the hydro-mechanical behaviour of compacted bentonites as interaggregate porosity becomes negligible. In that case, model assumes bentonite deformability to be controlled only by microstructural modelling level in a double approach. Hence, bulk stiffness system defined relationship between void ratio and thermodynamic swelling pressure, requiring no additional parameters simulate overall behaviour. An experimental study has been conducted check conceptual consistency formulation, with favourable results. The quantitative potential also satisfactorily verified numerical simulation tests carried out this study. displacement-based finite-element developed systems modified run simulations. implemented using simple strategy can easily replicated similar models. Both capabilities computational cost efficiency confirm its practical interest.

متن کاملFree porosity investigation of compacted bentonite using XRD
Many countries intend to use compacted bentonite as a barrier in their deep geological repositories for nuclear waste. In order to describe and predict hydraulic conductivity or radionuclide transport through the bentonite barrier, fundamental understanding of the microstructure of compacted bentonite is needed. This study examined the interlayer swelling and overall microstructure of Wyoming B...

Bentonites of various types are being investigated in many countries as backfill materials in high-level radioactive waste disposal concepts. Being able to understand the chemistry of the porewater in compacted bentonite is very important since it is critical to predicting radionuclide solubilities and to the synthesis of sorption data bases, and hence to repository safety studies. The argillite extracted from Bure site (France) is proposed, after being crushed and com-pacted, as a possible sealing and backfill material in the geological high-level radioactive waste disposal. In this study, the effects of the grain size distribution and the microstruc-ture on the hydro-mechanical behaviour of the compacted crushed argillite have been investigated. The volume change proper...
